What’s in a Name?

From a child I’ve always been told to “watch what you say”, that “words have power” and everything you say, whether knowingly or unknowingly has meaning. Words are so powerful in fact, that they can be used to uplift or to tear down. They can be used to bring communities and nations together but can also be used to divide them. Thus, as I began the process of selecting the name of our firm I wanted to make sure that not only did it have meaning, but that it would be a name that we all, as human beings, could relate to.

According to Webster’s dictionary, to segue is a verb, meaning there’s action involved. To segue means “to make a transition without interruption from one activity, topic, scene, or part to another.” We are each active participants in our own lives and by nature, experience many changes as we transition from one stage of life to the next. Sometimes these transitions are seamless and made with little to no interruption. At other times, these transitions can be very difficult and take time to adjust to.

One of the most difficult transitions I’ve personally faced was going from graduating high school to becoming both a father and husband 3 years later. It was a reality check, a segue in my life that I was unprepared for but was determined to give my best effort. To go from being in a household where my parents allowed me to focus on school and sports, never really discussing finances or how to manage money, to now being the “man of the house” was very intimidating. As we know, there is no manual on how to raise children and all we can do is our very best with the knowledge and family we have. From a financial perspective, I became more determined than ever to provide for my family and to make sure that I could provide every opportunity for them to succeed. To look back at where I began to now having a wife, 2 teenagers, a pre-teen and a preschooler, I am blessed. However, I do understand that without the help of a strong support system and the financial guidance of mentors, things would have been much more difficult.
